Looking for a service oriented activity? Here are just a few ideas. As always, your recommendations are welcome in the comments section below.
IDEAS
Thank Yous. Make a list of people who help you in a normal week and mail them a letter. In this case, snail mail is best. Collect a pile of thank you notes (or better yet, make them yourselves) and send them to a teacher, hair dresser, community leader, or leave one in your mailbox for your mailman/woman.
Recycle for Charity Think why it's important to take care of the earth and our environment. Choose a local charity that promotes values important to you and your family. Make a flyer to let your friends and neighbors know that you would like to collect their plastics, cans and bottles. (If they leave it on their porches rather than bring it to you, you will get a larger donation.) As a young women's group or family, go to the recycling center to donate the items you collected. Donate the money to your favorite charity with a thank you note for the good they do.
Place mats for Children's Hospitals Talk about those who have inspired you by triumphing over illnesses. Decorate legal size poster board with colorful images, words of encouragement, jokes, quotes, etc. Glue a favorite fabric on the back. Laminate, then deliver to a local children's hospital. Great for nursing homes or senior centers too!
Firefighter Appreciation Day Discuss fire safety with your class or family and how you would feel if there weren't any firefighters. Contact your local fire station and find out how many firefighters (professional and volunteer) are at that station. Ask what day and time it would be convenient for your class or family to stop by with:
- plates of homemade treats,
- banners made from butcher block paper that you and your class have signed,
- candy poster with messages like, "When homes get HOT TOMALES we are filled with ALMOND JOY to know you're nearby."
